Telangana Chief Minister K Chandra Sekhar Rao has announced that his government is planning two more airports – one each at Shamirpet and Ghatkesar — to meet the needs of the city’s population. However this move does not go well with the GMR group that operates the current Hyderabad airport. The company is exploring legal options to stall construction of airports within the city.

The company says the government’s decision is against the protective clauses of the agreement signed between the government and them. According to the agreement, no new airport should come up within a 150-km radius of Hyderabad during the concession period. However GMR has decided that it will not rush in this issue and will approach state government and aviation ministry. They will be considering legal options just in case the government calls for tenders of new airports.

Primarily GMR group believes that this proposal of the government is not easy to execute but will leave nothing behind to protect the clauses of the agreement signed. The current International Airport has a capacity of 12 million passengers and is operating at two-thirds of its capacity. It has flexibility to expand to 40 million passengers a year.
