Trailer Talk: Stylised Action Entertainer The trailer of Tamil biggie Beast starring Vijay is out now. It is an action-packed entertainer with the star playing the role of a spy. The early impression is that of style over substance, though as the story appears wafer-thin from the promo.

Right from the film’s announcement, there has been a curiosity about it due to the combo factor and the title. Nelson Dilipkumar is known for his black comedies (so far, at least), and a title like Beast throws off everyone.

Well, the trailer gives clarity now. Beast looks like the most action-heavy movie done by Nelson. The story is simply that of a spy stuck in a mall in a hostage situation. However, the whole mounting is on a grand larger than life scale. It seems to be inspired by the famous Money Heist series or the now (relatively) forgotten, but trendsetting blockbuster Die Hard movie. In short, Beast is Die Hard meets Money Heist.

The action within the mall and outside seems to be the main focus here. The war scenes look over the top, and one can sense some tackiness. The final outcome is likely to depend on how Nelson mixes the war, mall action and entertainment. Will it be all style, or is there substance to it?

Vijay looks in fine form, but it is once again Anirudh who dominates with the background score. It is terrific. He elevates the trailer with his music as he has done for the previous Vijay movie, Master.

We also glimpse other characters essayed by Selva Raghavan and Pooja Hegde. The latter has a lesser presence. But there will be a couple of songs, so there’s nothing to worry about.

Check out the trailer below. Sun Pictures produces Beast on a never seen before scale. It hits the big screens in multiple languages on April 13th.
