Gold smuggling had become a lucrative option especially after the Government of India levy hefty taxes to make the yellow metal costly. Smugglers are coming up with new ways to smuggle the gold. Recently the smugglers have started mixing powdered gold in molten rubber and making supporting cushions inside shoes.
It happened Last Wednesday, Customs officials almost left the smuggler but caught him in the last minute as they found the smuggler abnormally tall in the boots and also they were too heavy. When they have heated the cushions inside the shoes, rubber melted leaving gold powder worth 3.3 Kgs.
Smugglers are baiting travelers with a commission of Rs 20,000 per trip, apart from free airfare and hotel costs. In most occasions they zero in the traffickers through social media and Whatsapp.
