2022 has been a breakout year for mid-range films. We’ve seen a handful of mid-range Telugu films that tried something out of the ordinary and managed to impress the audience. For those wondering why only these select few films, the criteria here is trying something new and also winning at the box office. The mentioned films have reported very good box office numbers and are successful in every theatrical circuit be it overseas or domestic Telugu market.
DJ Tillu – Sithara Naga Vamsi & Siddhu Jonnalagadda
DJ Tillu is possibly the best comedy entertainer of the year. Siddhu got into the skin of the comical character and bought it closer to the masses. Sithara’s Naga Vamsi backed an unconventional subject and presented it with lavish making values. Both Siddhu and Vamsi combinedly delivered a product that can be termed the standout entertainer of the year.
Major – Adivi Sesh – Anurag Reddy
Sesh had always been big on new-age thrillers. This time around, he came up with Major, an encapsulation of the life of legendary Mumbai attacks martyr, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. He excelled in the role and also came up with emotionally engrossing writing for the same. Young producers Anurag Reddy and Sharath Chandra also deserve a pat on the back for his efforts and so do Mahesh Babu’s GMB Entertainments, and Sony India Pictures.
Bimbisara – Kalyan Ram- Vassishta
Kalyan Ram badly needed solid commercial success and he couldn’t have asked for a better result than Bimbisara. The film minted good revenues at the box office and moreover, Kalyan Ram saw much needed success as an actor and as the producer. He deserves credit for trusting in the debut director and executing a project of this scale. Debut director Vassishta also came out with great conviction. The men behind the project are now working on the sequel which has great box office prospects.
Sita Ramam – Swapna Dutt – Hanu Raghavapudi
Swapna Dutt and Priyanka Dutt orchestrated this exemplary work with great belief and conviction. The result is one of the better love dramas from Tollywood in recent times. The making values, and excellent technical finesse played an instrumental role in the blockbuster success of Sita Ramam. The director Hanu Raghavapudi also deserves a pat on the back for the way he brought this slow paced love drama to life. Swapna’s confidence from day one on this project and the end result has increased her brand value big time in the industry.
We also have HIT 2 and Karthikeya 2 that belong to this ‘different’ films category and turned hits but these are sequels.
