Suriya Rakshasudu Movie ReviewWhat is the film about?
Mashusudhan aka Masss gets some special power under some circumstances. How he uses it to make a living that conflicts with his love life along with few unexpected twists form the basic plot.

How is Suriya’s performance?
Suriya just doesn’t seem to be happy doing a simple and straight forward entertainer. Here too his penchant for multiple shaded characters give rise to unexpected turns. He is good as Masss which is expected. It’s his other character that is a surprise. He is good in that surprising part as well as one would expect him to be. Nothing extraordinary that we have’t seen before but he does more than enough to get the audience connected.

Director Venkat Prabhu Rakshasudu Movie ReviewDirection By Venkat Prabhu?
Once again Rakshasudu follows the typical path of director Venkat Prabhu. This time the genre is different but the thriller elements are retained as usual. The problem here is once again similar to his previous film. It is the clumsy screenplay that makes one loose interest in the proceedings after a point. A good scene is followed by few rather unnecessarily stretched sequences that takes away one’s interest. Also the plainness at the end of all the mumbo-jumbo set up and two acts means the impact at the end is missing which is so essential for films of this type.

Parts of the film are good, like the flashback, bits of the romantic track, the conning using the special ability. But they all never gel well into a cohesive narrative where viewer is glued to the proceedings. They come randomly generate interest and go away as randomly. In the end what we have is a film by Venkat Prabhu that is uneven in tone and narrative. The director seems to have so much in mind but nothing comes across seamlessly and interestingly on the screen.

Nayanatara Rakshasudu Movie ReviewNayanatara, Preneetha and others performance?
Nayanthara has a decent role but that has nothing to do with the main plot of the film. The character is merely used as a catalyst to give the plot its first big push. Praneetha is even worse. Also there is nothing to say about the performance wise too. Samuthirakani playing the main baddie is underutilized like many other actors Jayaprakash, Vidyu Raman, Sriman, Karunas etc. It is once again Premgi Amaren who has as big a role as hero. He repeats his perform once again, although he has a few funny. Parthiban in an extended support appearance is good. Brahmanandam like always in a Tamil director’s film is wasted in an irritable character.

Yuvan Shankar Raja Rakshasudu Movie ReviewMusic and other departments?
Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is a mixed bag. The background music is sensational though. He lifts many scenes with his work here. cinematography is good. Editing is bad. Dialogues are hilarious at places but otherwise are very ordinary.

Highlights Rakshasudu Movie ReviewHighlights?
Story.
Suriya.
Few bits and pieces through-out.

Drawbacks?
Clumsy screenplay.
Predictable climax.
Poor CGI.

Drawbacks Rakshasudu Movie ReviewAlternative take:
The film’s narrative would have got a solid grip with elimination of lots of unnecessary sequences. Comedy sequence involving Brahmanandam or the initial revelation of ghosts with the graphics, things like these should be trimmed all the way till the end. This would have made for a far engaging film. Also the “twist” revelation involving Suriya too could be done away with and that could also make for an engaging alternative take.

Did I enjoy it?
In parts throughout.

Will you recommend it?
Yes, with lots of reservations. If one is hell bent to watch something different give it a try.
