Telangana droughtNational media has been constantly reporting on farmer’s suicides in Telangana for quite a while. Taking media reports as suo motu, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had issued a notice to Telangana Chief secretary to respond with in two weeks . NHRC said 76 debt-ridden farmers have died by taking their own lives as they were stuck in debts and crop failures added pressure on farmers.

During the recent Assembly session opposition parties have alleged that farmer’s suicides are the result of new government’s failure. But KCR denied it saying it’s a false news and he received reports that there are only few such incidents, he said he is awaiting a complete report from district collectors.

As per reports, highest suicides are from Maharashtra, followed by Telangana and Karnataka. According to Ministry of Agriculture reports, Maharashtra reported 204 suicides (up to April), Telangana (up to October) reported 69 and AP (up to June) reported 3 farmer suicides. However, these numbers are far short of estimates compared to media reports.
